On a day more suited to penguin wrestling than rugby, Malvern put in one of their best performances of the season against a fine Brixham side and, despite coming off second best, gave a lot of hope for the future. Time and again the incisive Brixham pack was stopped dead as Malvern’s forwards snaffled the ball and forced turnovers, whilst the back row and three-quarter line were quick to snuff out any Brixham attacks. Despite this, the visitors edged ahead with a try from Steve Worth, converted by Ben Lovell, but the lead only lasted until the half hour when Malvern struck back. Rory Gratwohl came off the back of the scrum and fed James Southall, who jinked his way through to score and bring the gap back to only two points. Whilst Brixham continued to have the most possession, Malvern’s defensive play was so good that they continually forced errors and frustrated the Devon side’s attempts to open up the game.

The second half continued in the same vein as Brixham probed and Malvern continued to foil them, only a penalty allowing Brixham to increase their lead. It took a mistake on the referee’s part to alter the course of the game. He missed a clear knock on by the Brixham winger, instead awarding a penalty to them for a later offence, and from the resultant catch and drive they piled on the pressure to score through Tom Clarke, Lovell converting. This gave the Devonian side the breathing space they so clearly needed, especially as the Malvern pack were annihilating their scrum and putting them under immense pressure.

With the final whistle there was relief on the Brixham faces and disappointment etched on those from Malvern, but a proud and defiant showing gives hope for the rest of the season.

Malvern now go to Whitchurch for a North Midlands Cup match this Saturday, kick off 2.00pm, when they attempt to reach the semi-final stage again.
