Under-10s match report: North Midlands Tournament at Kidderminster Carolians 18th November 2012

Ben, Ewan, Harrison, Marshall, Joe, Jan, Laurie, Louis, Rauri, Reuben, Tivey and Will.

A return to Kidderminster after only a month, this time for the annual tournament featuring 16 teams from across the Midlands.

The format was 4 groups with the top and bottom two passing through to wither the Cup of Plate knock-out stages. The lads were set against Shrewsbury, Redditch and Stourbridge in the first stage, played on a beautiful clear morning, after the hardest frost of the winter had been burned off by the sun.

The first game against Shrewsbury was very evenly matched for most of the first half until Shrews finally opened up a gap and scored the first try. Could have been another soon after but Mose were switched on from the re-start and showed their tacking skills to good effect., Jan in particular. Marshall kept a lot of possession but was unable to break through before the half-time whistle.

Shrews were more switched on at the re-start and took a quick individual try and would have added another but for losing control. Mose’s rucking seemed to weaken and the score remained 2-0, largely thanks to some fearless tacking by Ben at the finish.

The Reddich game started well with Rauri making a strong solo run but without support so possession was lost when he was forced to ground. Ben put in a solid tackle near our try line. Quick ball to from Will the re-start set up Will for a dazzling run to score.

Mose then rucked well to set up Ben for a quick follow up. Redditch, it must be said, had a worrying large lad who posed a threat every time he took possession but at this point Will and Harrison worked well together to deny him a score.

From the start of the second half Marshall took possession and forced his way to score in a display of absolute determination. Mose obviously felt comfortable, with the predictable result of a quick return by Redditch! Could have followed with another but once again we managed to stop the big lad and followed that up with some lovely passing between Jan and Joe which could easily have resulted in another score. Marshall and Rauri took over the honours, this time with a result. Final score 4-1 to Mose.

The Stourbridge game started with strong scoring run from Louis (who was impressive throughout the day) and nearly a quick follow up before Tivey was bundled out by their try line. The boys switched off for a bit and allowed score to even, The half continued with some good running but Mose repeatedly lost possession.

Jan repeated his determined solo work to score in the second half, an advantage kept thanks to another fearless tackle by Ben. Mose had a clear scoring opportunity spoilt by a silly forward pass (keep behind the line of play lads!) but retained the lead to be second in Group C and so through to the Cup competition.

I will gloss over the quarter final against Worcester but 7-0 was a far better result than some had put in against the defending champions. Poor retention of ball in rucks had been a feature of the group games but was more clearly evident against this very strong side. We also had three scrums that all went against the head – identifying an area that need more practice.

Worcester went through to be knocked out by Luctonians (which the Kiddy match report flags as a significant achievement!) who were beaten by Droitwich in the final.

But well done to the lads to make it through to the top half of the competition and many thanks to Kidderminster for hosting an excellent day.

I am happy to report that although the ambulance was called for one of the Kiddy players, their match report confirms that he was back at the ground after a check up.
