The top versus bottom mismatch that many people feared came to light at Goresbrook on Saturday as winless Barking were blown away at home by the high-flying Henley Hawks. Barking were first on the scoreboard thanks to a Craig Ratford penalty but that was as good as it got for the hosts as Henley ran riot to win 84-3. The Hawks scored 13 tries – one of them going to the division’s top points-scorer James Comben, who was also successful with 10 conversions.

Just three points separate Henley from the four sides immediately below them, with Shelford leading the chasing pack. Shelford recorded their sixth straight bonus-point victory at Canterbury, while Redruth stay in third thanks to a 31-23 success at Lydney. Outside centre Lewis Vinnicombe scored two of the Reds’ four tries.

Dings Crusaders’ performance at fourth-placed Worthing reflected their recent upturn in form, which has seen the Bristol-based club win its last three matches. But they fell just short in making it win number four after going down to a 29-25 defeat on the south coast. Right wing Jordan Burns and flanker Samuel Hewick both scored a brace of tries apiece and hooker Matthew Miles also found his way onto the scoresheet for the home side.

Hartpury are just three points adrift of Shelford following a 22-8 win at Chinnor. Wing Ian Clark was the star of the show for the students with a couple of tries to take his tally for the season to eight – the joint second highest in the league.

Bournemouth won the battle of the seaside resorts with a 32-15 win at home to Southend. The scores were tied at 12-all at the interval, but a strong second half from the Lions handed them their third win of the season and keeps them one place above their opponents in the league table.
