Your News Loughborough Students 18 - Blaydon 37

Despite enduring a late start in leaving a frozen Tyneside and fielding a weakened side, Blaydon were further hindered in losing their scrum-half with a serious injury midd-way through the first half in which they battled uphill into a severe wind. Not only did they lead 11-20 at the break however, a very structured performance saw them on top for most of the game to run out comfortable winners by 5 tries to 2.

The first try was secured after just 4 minutes with a Gavin Jones effort straight from the training manual, a catch and drive and then 20 metres to the line. Andrew Baggett added the conversion and then he and ex- Tynedale man Stuart Hall put over a brace of penalties each before the Students centre Callum Wilson broke through to score under the posts.

Andrew Davies unfortunately suffered a suspected broken leg in the build up to the try and play was suspended for 35 minutes whilst he was stretchered off and taken to hospital.

Blaydon's best effort came just before the interval when they turned over good ball in the loose and re-cycled it 14 times for centre Tom Banks to touch down in the corner.

The Students came out fighting in the second period but failed to break down a resolute Blaydon defence and conceded a 3rd try to Simon Barber, again after forward pressure. Baggett was then put clear by Hall Charlton and held off 2 strong challenges to score under the posts for a bonus point and add the conversion to give him a personal tally of 17 points.

Loughborough grabbed a second score through their centre Chris Kinlock, again converted by Hall, but fittingly it was another Hall who had the last word, Blaydon skipper Matt who with the neatest of side-steps touched down under the posts after more typically effective work by the forwards.
