Your News Blaydon 38 - Old Albanians 29

On what was their first visit to Crow Trees the Old Albanians opted to stay on the pitch after the pre-match warm up only to be caught stone cold after 45 seconds of the game. Robert Bell was the scorer from a Chris Wearmouth pass, and the flanker was in again on 4 minutes this time typically from a rolling maul.

The visitors were at sixes and sevens and even at this early stage it was looking a one-sided affair with no hint of the later fight back that could have turned the game around.

17 year old Zach Kibirige, on the end of a cut out pass from Andrew Baggett, shot clear down the left to send in Charles Inceldon and by the interval No8 Jason Smithson had secured a try bonus point when crashing over in the corner from yet another maul.

Johannes Lombard meanwhile had gone in from broken play for the visitors but it hardly seemed to matter as Blaydon took a 26-5 lead into the break. And then it all started to go wrong.

Just 4 minutes into the second period Bell was sent to the sin-bin putting the OB's on the front foot and back on the score-sheet through replacement Terry Adams. Directly from the restart Gavin Painter failed to control a high bounce on half-way and Adams was away again, both efforts converted by Lawrence Rayner and the Blaydon lead was down to 26-19.

When Oliver Marchon grabbed a 4th try for the Hertfordshire side the gap was just 2 points but a yellow card again made the difference, Kibirige scooting over in the corner for a debut try just as he had for the Newcastle Falcons 7 days earlier with Andrew Baggett putting over a 4th conversion.

Smithson effectively sealed victory with his second on 68 minutes but even then the visitors were not done and after Marchon had also grabbed a second it was a nervous final 4 minutes for the home crowd.
