Your News U11 Hornets hailed as Victors

The Hornets U11's made a trip down west on Saturday to play Hayle and with the host team having been County Champions for the last two seasons a hard game was expected. Both teams had healthy squad sizes and it was decided to play three fifteen minute sessions to ensure everyone had a chance to perform. Hayle attacked from the offset forcing Newquay on to the back foot. Newquay were finding it difficult to compete against the much larger Hayle pack who won all of the scrummage and most of the line outs . That coupled with some fine rucking saw them score two tries and a single conversion to lead 12-0 at the end of the first period. The second session started in similar fashion with Hayle pressing forward once more. Despite some strong tackling from the Newquay backs led by the usual feisty Ben Hunt at scrum half, sustained pressure from Hayle saw them win a scrum close to the Newquay line from which they broke on the blindside to go over and extend their lead. A rare win at the line out gave the Newquay backs the chance to start to move the ball for the first time, Ethan Morgan and Eddie Pearce making good progress down the right before being forced out.

With the score at 19-0 the third period looked like it could be all about Newquay keeping the score respectable. Far from it. A penalty close to The Hayle line allowed Ethan Reed to show his strength as he drove through the Hayle defence to open Newquay's account. Ably converted by Ethan Morgan the try gave Newquay the lift in self belief they needed. Shortly after Jack Higginson made impressive progress through the middle and with the forwards beginning to get the measure of the opposition Perran Heaman brushed them aside to score on the right. Suddenly a comeback that looked like mission impossible minutes earlier was on the cards. With a greater share of the ball the backs began to use their speed as Newquay went on the offensive, Eddie Pearce only just bundled into touch after an excellent run. The forwards were now gaining the upper hand in the scrum. Winning one close in to the Hayle line quick thinking scrum half Ben Hunt rounded the packs and side stepped past two defenders to score. With the scores now level it was all down to Ethan Morgan to convert the try for an amazing win which he duly did, rounding off both a great individual and team performance. Final score Hornets 21 Hayle 19.
