Yatton Scorers- Try B Bowyer; Con S Pugh; Pens 4 S Pugh; Drop Goal J Bale

‘Yatton spirit grabs nailbiting first win’

When 60 minutes of play came up in this Western Counties North encounter, Yatton supporters felt sure they were well on the way to seeing their side secure the first win of the season with the score then at 19-8, but Avon weren’t finished and were desperate to stop their own run of away defeats.

Avon started the game at the gallop with a penalty within the opening seconds and severely tested 6the home defence for the next 15 minutes.

A Yatton penalty retrieved the difference but Avon kept the edge, pinning Yatton within their half

and collecting their first try in the 40th minute. Each side had taken a pounding and injury time tick on, Yatton swung the battle in their favour with positive attacking play and finished the half in front at 13-8 thanks to another Steve Pugh penalty and try conversion – play maker Chris Quinn had slipped a timely pass to rising star Ben Bowyer who crashed over.

The fired up young Yatton side grew in confidence for the third quarter but Avon to showed their ability to defend and restricted Yatton to two penalty conversions – but surely a lead of 11 points with 20 minutes to go would be enough?

Yatton were set back on their heels when Avon hit a purple patch of two tries and one conversion within a 10 minute spell to reclaim the lead at 19-20.

Smarting Yatton woke up to the near disaster and sallied back up the slope squinting into the low dying sun. Managerial judgement and new rugby laws allowed shoulder injury victim Jon Bale to return to the fray and sweetly strike a superbly worked drop goal. Sheer determination then restricted Avon within their 22 while the remaining minutes were ticked off.

This Saturday Yatton 1st XV travel to Gloucestershire to face fellow strugglers Chosen Hill.
