Blaydon went down narrowly in a game that was effectively decided in the final quarter in which 6 tries were scored in quick succession, but unfortunately for the Crow Trees outfit 4 of them were secured by Esher who went on to gain a deserved victory.

With former Saracens and Toulon lock-forward Kris Chesney in their ranks Esher, who were relegated from the Championship last season, were always dangerous on the break and at times had little difficulty in breeching the home defence. They started the better and despite going behind to scores from rolling mauls, as most sides do at Blaydon, regrouped to end the half on a high note and then cut loose in the second period.

The Blaydon pack were heading for the line on 16 minutes when Esher pulled down the maul and referee Wayne Falla instantly blew for a penalty try. Six minutes later and from a similar postion Esher were again being marched backwards and this time Robert Bell was not to be denied.

By the interval however Esher centre Tom Cheeseman had cleverley outwitted the home defence to send in Joseph Brown and the deficit was down to 17-10.

For a while in the second period it was nip and tuck with tries coming thick and fast and the lead changing hands 3 times. Charles Walker had a simple run-in for Esher and then Jack Clifford looped round from the tail of a line-out to storm in. Within 2 minutes Blaydon were back in front when Tom Jeffery finished off good work by Andrew Davies and Gavin Painter, but no sooner had that dust settled than Gareth Morgan was crossing at the other end, and just as quickly Clifford was in again from half-way

Andrew Baggett, who again had his kicking boots on with 4 conversions and a penalty, ran in the final home score on 80 minutes and in time added on Blaydon fought desperately to close the gap but had to be content with the consolation of earning 2 bonus points.
