Your News Reading 58 - Swanage & Wareham 16

Swanage & Wareham Rugby Club visited third placed reading at Holme Park, with hopes held high, but with Swans at the bottom of the table, it looked to be a difficult game.

It did not look good for the visitors as they gave away a first minute penalty, but fortunately for Swans, Reading kicker Andy Tweediie missed. Swans were pegged back in their own half, a series of missed tackles enabled Reading winger Chris Greig to score in the corner. Reading went further ahead with a penalty goal, but after ten minutes a break by Swans centre Rory Triniman cleared the way for fly half Charlie Parish was following up to score Swans opening try in the corner. (8pts 5pts). For the next ten minutes Swans gave as good as they got, but after 20 minutes from a line out Reading centre Mike Grubb worked his way in for a converted try. Charlie Parish landed a penalty goal for Swans to make the score 15 8, but in the last five minutes of the first half Reading added two more tries to bring the half time score to 27pts 8pts.

Swans started well in the second half as Charlie Parish landed an early penalty goal, and for most of the first twenty minutes of the half Swans were playing the better rugby, putting the home side under considerable pressure, but the points would not come. However it could not last, and in the space of five minutes Reading scored two converted tries to bring the score to 41pts 11pts after 65 minutes. Swans then appeared to lose the plot and in the next ten minutes Reading added three more tries, including a hat trick of tries from Reading no.8 James Guttridge, bringing the score to 58pts 11pts. Swans were not finished and after a series of penalties and scrums in the Reading 22 in the last minute, eventually Swans no.8 Joe Desmond was on hand to power his way over the Reading try line from a few metres out at least to give Swans their second, and consolation try as Reading won by 58pts 16 pts.
