In the end it was the Blaydon defence that won the day, and never better exemplified than by Frazer Wilson's chase down of Tynedale winger Hamish Smales in the closing minutes when a potentially match winning try seemed certain.

"Tynedale are always tough to beat" said Blaydon Director of Rugby Micky Ward "I was really pleased with the way we defended, they were throwing everything at us near the end but we got 2 important turnovers on our own line".

Tynedale had much the better of the opening stages but there was little to excite the substantial crowd until the 18th minute when Blaydon ran in a try from totally out of the blue. Frazer Wilson appeared from nowhere to scoot down the wing in typical style to send in Charles Inceldon near the flag but the score was only awarded after consultation between the referee and touch judge.

Andrew Baggett was off target with the conversian attempt, the fly-half making amends with a penalty approaching half-time but Blaydon could have done better when Andy Davies jinked his way into the 22 only to see his scoring pass go down.

At the other end Tynedale also spurned a golden opportunity when their No8 failed to spot a 2 man overlap but in the 6th minute of time added on fly-half Matt Outson put over a penalty to make it 8-3 at the break.

Five minutes into the second period Wilson was bundled into touch near the Tynedale line whereupon the visitors messed up the throw by patting it back into touch. Blaydon made no such mistake with their turn, Jason Smithson was driven over, and Bagget converted to give them a 12 points advantage.

When home scrum-half Davies was sin-binned however Tynedale chipped it through at the short scrum and quick thinking Alan Rogers shot round to win the touch. Outson added the conversion to bring it back to a 5 point gap and from then on anything could have happened, and very nearly did but for Wilson's dramatic last ditch tackle.
