Caldy put the disappointment of last seasons promotion play-off defeat to Richmond behind them with an opening day win away to Huddersfield. Four different players scored tries for the Wirral outfit, three of them converted by Richard Vasey who also landed two penalties in 32-13 victory.

Preston Grasshoppers continued the fine form they showed towards the back end of last season to score six tries and at the same time shut out Darlington Mowden Park, champions of National 3 North, in a 34-0 win.

Otley matched Hoppers six-try return in a dramatic game at newly promoted Dudley Kingswinford. DK led for the majority of the contest but Otley winger James Twomeys second try of the game two minutes from time snatched victory from the jaws of defeat for the Yorkshire side.

The closest finish of the day, though, came at Hull where replacement fly-half Ben Copsons injury-time conversion of Charles Joness second try earned Bromsgrove a nail-biting 30-29 win.

Like Otley, Leicester Lions place in Two North was only secured on the final day of the 2011/12 campaign. But they too will be hoping for better times ahead after a good opening day win. Joe Marstons hat-trick was the key to their 32-3 success over Westoe.

There was little to choose between Hull Ionians and Sheffield Tigers, with the Hull side coming from 24-3 down inside the first 13 minutes to win 28-24. Left wing William Heylings got the crucial score and the try bonus point with a minute left on the clock to complete a remarkable comeback.

New-look Stourbridge earned the local bragging rights in the West Midlands following their 25-5 win over Birmingham & Solihull. Replacement Stefan Cooksammy made it a debut to remember with a couple of tries.

Drew Cheshire scored a hat-trick of tries in the county that shares his surname, as Luctonians secured a 24-16 win at Stockport.
