Bournemouth and Chinnor, both newly promoted to National Two, made a dream start to life at a higher level with impressive victories on the opening day. Bournemouth, promoted as champions of Three South West, kicked off with a 32-17 win at home to Canterbury, largely thanks to the boot of debutant, Ben Stevenson, who contributed 22 points. Chinnor, meanwhile, edged out Launceston in a 62-point thriller at Polson Bridge. Tom Gray scored the decisive try for the visitors in a game where the lead changed hands five times. Cornish All Blacks outside centre Lewis Paterson scored a hat-trick of tries yet still ended up on the losing side.

Launcestons Cornish rivals Redruth enjoyed better fortunes on the first weekend, as they came from behind to beat Taunton, 25-15 at Hyde Park. Tom Duncan crossed twice for the visitors in the second half. Hartpury College came out on top in another West Country derby, beating Clifton 16-10 at Cribbs Causeway.

Former Bath and England prop Duncan Bell christened his first competitive match in charge of Lydney with a win 34-10 at home to Barking. Backs Josh Innes and Alexander Hall both got a brace of tries.

There were also home wins for Henley and Southend. Liam ONeill was the hat-trick hero as the Hawks got off to the perfect start, while at Warners Bridge Southend managed to repel a stirring fightback from Dings Crusaders. Dings came from 19-0 down to square the game with 10 minutes to go, much-travelled fly-half Mark Woodrow contributing all 19 of their points through four penalties and a converted try. But Southend responded with a try from Mark Billings to take the honours in a game that was littered with six yellow cards shared equally between the Seasiders and the Bristolians.
