Blaydon 4ths 8 Newton Aycliffe 32

Newton Aycliffe Rugby Club travelled up the A1 to play Blaydon Bricks in a friendly match. With only one game being played at Blaydon, the match was held on the first team pitch. The weather was perfect for the open style of rugby preferred by Aycliffe. Despite the absence of a number of regular starters, Aycliffe were able to field a squad of 18 players.

Aycliffe took an early lead after Joe Watson caught a kick and was well supported by Luke Crossen who was able to link with the backs, Gareth Parsonage finishing off from distance. Luke Tinkler added the conversion. Blaydon moved into Aycliffe territory to add a penalty before taking the lead with a pushover try. A Tinkler penalty regained the visitor’s advantage. The game then became rather bad-tempered and scrappy until near the end of the half, when Aycliffe began to get on top again; Andy Newman scoring a try. The score at the interval was 15 – 8 to Aycliffe.

The second half was hard fought but again Aycliffe had the edge. Keith Greenwood scored a try after his good support saw him unopposed from 30 metres; Tinkler again converted. Good running from Watson, who saw plenty of ball throughout the game, saw him increase the score. Ronnie Gilyeat finished the scoring, being in the right place at the right time to touch down under the posts; Tinkler’s conversion rebounding off a post. The final score was 32 – 8 to the visitors.

This was Aycliffe’s fifth straight regular season victory, averaging more than 50 points a game. On Saturday 25th October, Aycliffe host Chester le Street 2nds for the second time this season; kick-off is at 3pm. The rugby club would like to thank their sponsors Aston Hotels and ServiceForce.
