An injury ravaged Towcestrians side failed narrowly to cope with a Bedford Athletic outfit intent on avoiding the tight relegation fight.

Tows started the match badly with a penalty awarded to the opposition in the first minute of the game, the fly half James Mortimer adding the points for Bedford Athletic.

After that Towcester’s misfortune continued with a try from the Athletics’ colossus second row Martin Wolfendon, Mortimer then added the extra two points to make the visitors Ten points ahead of the home team.

Towcester then at last came into the game, Chrissie George poaching a ball from the driven back Athletic scrum to then release the Tows debutant wing forward Gareth Collins to sprint to the line, James Falvey adding the extras.

After the Towcester try most of possession was with Athletic as the backs were looking dangerous as they spread the ball wide very quickly, Tows then lost centre Aaron Goodman to a yellow card, Athletic took advantage of the extra man running in two unconverted try’s from the tight head and the fly half Mortimer.

Towcester refused to lay down however coming back with a try from Richard Tustian after some well worked interplay between forwards and backs. Right wing Adam Wilkinson then dotted down under the posts for another try. Falvey then stroked the ball over, by half time Tows were trailing their visitors by one point as the score was 19-20. Athletic had been dominating possession in the first half.

At the start of the second half a storming lineout drive secured a try for Bedford Athletic, which was then converted by Mortimer.

A Falvey penalty kept Towcester within touching distance, and with the Tows backs now getting the ball out quicker than ever, only handing mistakes prevented them from scoring.

The Tows scrum, now totally dominant against the heavier Athletics eight had a series of penalty scrums on the oppositions line, when finally Tows scrum half George touched down wide out, when perhaps a penalty try would have been fairer. Falvey’s kick narrowly missed to see the game level with five minutes to go.

Tows then failed when the opportunity was given to them to put the ball behind the Athletic defence, They then paid the price as a line out was delivered five metres out from the Towcester line, the Athletics efficient line out drive secured the try to give Bedford Athletic the win. Tows at least gaining the two bonus points from the game.

Towcester Colts Reached the league playoff Final with a comfortable 43-0 win over, Olney.
