Your News Hull Ionians 29 - Luctonians 24

Luctonians playoff hopes received a setback when they were piped 29 points to 24 against a Hull Ionians

side who are in a fight to stave off relegation. Although the standard of play never reached a high standard it

was always a close contest. An error strewn start put the home side under early pressure and after some

good forward drives put the visitors close to the try line. After a scrum lock forward Paul Hulland dived

over near the posts. Will Hodnett added the simple conversion. With the wind at their backs Lucs

completely dominated the first 20 minutes but were unable to add a further score. They also missed a

relatively easy penalty from 35 metres out.

In their first excursion into the Lucs half Ionians opened their account when after some forward pressure

No 8 Joe Sanders set up a try for scrum half Adam Thomas. Lucs responded almost immediately when they

won a penalty which they kicked into the corner and following a line out Hulland was driven over for an

unconverted try. Straight from the restart Lucs failed to gather the ball allowing the impressive Sanders to

race through aided by some weak tackling to score a try which centre Dave Marshall converted to level the

score at 12 -12 at half time.

With the breeze behind them the home side were soon on the attack and following a line out they spun the

ball wide and a deft chip into the corner saw winger Sam Wilson touch down. Luctonians at this stage were

lethargic but things changed when following several infringements Ionians had a player yellow carded.

With their numerical advantage Lucs had a period of pressure, which resulted in 2 tries. First centre Alex

James went in under the posts after good work by the forwards, with Hodnett adding the extras. Minutes

later Hulland claimed his third try following a push over scrum. The conversion was missed but Lucs now

held a 24 17 lead with 17 minutes remaining.

The home side then exerted their own pressure but a good break out of defence by replacement Will Burton

relieved pressure. Soon after Ionians claimed their 4th try when following another chip ahead replacement

Gary Stephenson won the race to touch down to narrow the lead to 2 points.

Luctonians should then have increased their lead when Hodnett spilled the ball with a clear run to the

corner. With normal time running out a massive penalty kick down field set up a lineout and after sustained

forward pressure centre Sam Bowring dived over near the posts giving Marshall an easy conversion. There

was still time for Lucs to launch one last attack and following intense pressure close to the Ionians line they

conceded a penalty. The home side then kicked to touch to end the game.

Despite a loss Luctonians gained 2 bonus points but must be disappointed conceding 3 soft tries, something

which is not expected at this level.
