Defeat away to Westoe proved extremely costly for promotion- chasing Huddersfield who fell three places in the Two North table from second to fifth as a result of the setback in the

north east. Westoe, who won 31-21 thanks to two tries from No.8 Ben Frankland, now find themselves as the nearest challengers to runaway league leaders Loughborough Students,

although a 16- point gap exists between the top two. The Students were only spared defeat after Andy Hall struck a last- gasp penalty to earn a share of the spoils at Bromsgrove.

Caldy are only one point behind Westoe in the standings following a hard- fought 23-18 win away to Leicester Lions. In a see- saw game, the result was eventually settled by a Dom

Kohler drop goal and an Andre Soutar penalty. Luctonians and Huddersfield are a point further back in fourth and fifth respectively, Luctonians grinding out a 17-8 home win against

Stockport to keep their promotion hopes alive.

There is still a five- way battle to avoid relegation at the bottom of the table with any two from Hull Ionians, Harrogate, Nuneaton, Otley and Leicester Lions all with realistic hopes of

staying up. Kendal, though, looked resigned to the drop after a 28-19 defeat at Hull left them 13 points adrift of safety. Harrogate did their cause no harm with a 28-8 success against

relegation rivals Ionians, while Nuneaton drew at home to Preston Grasshoppers two points that could prove invaluable come the end of the season. Oltey lost at Sheffield Tigers.
