Your News Blaydon 17 - Coventry 17

Robbie Kalbraier just can't stop scoring tries. The Blaydon prop forward scored both the opener and the winner against Ealing last week and yesterday was at it again, touching down from close range in the 31st minute and then after being injured and replaced at half-time came back on to repeat the effort when he picked up and drove over for his 8th try in the last 5 games.

Disappointingly for him however his efforts failed to produce a 4th successive win for Blaydon as the visitors hit back late on to snatch a draw, just as they had done in the home fixture, and at the end went very close to taking all the points.

With the wind behind them Coventry took an early lead with a Khrist Kopetsky penalty but the irrepressible Kalbraier was soon to put that right when he was driven over from a line-out on the half-hour.

Coventry themselves were quick to respond and secured a 5-10 interval lead through their flank forward Brett Daynes after the pack had caused mayhem in the home 22.

Blaydon equally used the wind to good advantage when it was their turn to benefit and they had already been over the line but denied a try when Jason Smithson went in from a short scrum to level the scores, but unfortunately the No8 was injured in the process.

By middway through the half it was all Blaydon and when the forwards took it on after a Gavin Painter break who else but Kalbraier was on hand to give them the lead for the first time.

That should have been that but the visitors were allowed to hit back with a Matt Tibbatts try and Kopetsky conversion with 7 minutes remaining, and then it very nearly all went wrong.

Ben Morris and then Matt Thompson were both shown the yellow card, Blaydon conceded a string of penalties, much as they had throughout the game, and it needed some desparate defence to deny Coventry

what would have been a deserved winner.
