BEATEN National Under 17 Shield finalists Blaydon RFC will be bidding to go one step better this season when they open their challenge in this seasons Bowl competition with a visit to Wharfedale RFC on March 4, 2012.

The Newcastle side were the only Northern representatives in last seasons finals at Stourton Park, home of Stourbridge RFC, but they went down 33-14 against Clifton, who along with Reeds Weybridge, Trentham and Market Bosworth emerged as Shield, Bowl, Plate and Cup competition winners respectively.

The North will have 32 players going to post from all sectors of the region, with the first round draw creating a number of pairings that bring clubs together who do not normally meet in normal fixtures.

First round pairings are:

North Cup: Ryton v Ripon, Kirkby Lonsdale v Wirral, Heath v Stoke on Trent, Stockport v Guisborough.

North Plate: Caldy v Doncaster, West Park Leeds v North Shields, Chester v Carlisle, Ilkley v Sandbach.

North Bowl: Hartlepool Rovers v Malton & Norton, Warrington or Blackburn v Southport, Wharfedale v Blaydon, Moortown v Warrington/Blackburn/Winnington Park.

North Shield: Waterloo v Bolton, Darlington Mowden Park v Selby, Cleckheaton v Northwich, Macclesfield or Wilmslow v Keswick.
