Despite their advancing years, in 43-year-old World Cup veteran Nglau

Tau and 39-year-old former Newcastle Falcons star Matt Long,

Birmingham & Solihull possess a pair of prop forwards as formidable as

any outside the elite professional game.

Followers of National One will therefore be less than startled to hear that

crisis club Cambridge’s pack was comprehensively dismantled by Bees’

front row.

However, a few eyebrows may head skywards when their owners learn

that while Messrs Tau and Long enjoyed the entire spectacle from the

sidelines, it was Ignas Darkintis and Sean McCarthy – plus hookers Will

Radburn and Jack Preece – who treated the Cambridge front row to 80

minutes of scrummaging hell.

Based on Saturday’s evidence, cash-strapped Cambridge, who have

parted company with six players and director of rugby Bob Crookes in the

past three weeks, must rely on the 11 wins and 54 points already banked

to keep them in English rugby’s third tier.

Bees’ remote hopes of avoiding the drop remain alive, thanks to a bonus-

point win hewn from four close-range, forwards tries. Two were touched down by skipper Preece, following driving lineouts, while the referee

awarded two penalty tries when scrum push-overs were illegally repelled.

Cambridge managed a try in each half, through centre Sam Dimmick and

full-back Delarey Veenendaal.

CAMBRIDGE: Veenendaal, Ayrton, Lawson, Dimmick, Portsmouth; Bale,
