Your News Blaydon 12 - Ealing Trailfinders 10

A late try by prop forward Robbie Kalbraier secured a memorable victory for Blaydon over promotion chasing Ealing who had taken a 5 point advantage into the closing stages. The Crow Trees outfit had hung on bravely for much of the second half but when their chance came they finished in fine style.

Twice they turned over Ealing ball, twice the visitors offended and each time Blaydon progressed upfield via the touchline. When Ealing were penalised a 3rd time for preventing release of the ball ex-rugby league referee Carl Kirkpatrick had seen enough and flanker Lee Starling was shown the red card.

Blaydon did what they did best and again kicked to the corner and from the catch and drive Kalbraier was in again to the delight of the crowd for his 6th try in 4 games.

Andrew Baggett put over a difficult conversion and Ealing had gone the way of most of the top teams at the hands of a revitalised Blaydon for whom this was a 3rd successive victory.

Earlier it had all started in similar fashion for Blaydon with the forwards well on top, winning line-outs and setting up the opener for Kalbraier in the 10th minute.

Ealing hit back with a Chris Ward penalty and at the break it was 5-3 with Blaydon looking forward to turning round with the substantial wind behind them. The benefits were not immediately obvious however as visiting full-back Peter Hodgkinson broke from deep to surge through their defence for a fine solo try to which Ward added the points.

Ealing in their best spell had chances to have clinched the win but last ditch tackles by a magnificent Blaydon defence kept them out and the stage was set for a rousing finale.
