NOTTINGHAMSHIRE club Ashfield have secured funding from Sport Englands Small Grants Programme to help deliver its burgeoning after-schools programme.

Ashfield will use the grant to deliver rugby to a predicted 1,000 players and work with locally-trained young volunteer leaders at sites in the Ashfield District culminating in festivals linked to the club.

Brian Dobb of Ashfield RFC said This is a massive boost and help serve the clubs efforts in growing its Mini/Junior section further

We had very few young players at the club eight years ago and we now have 200 regularly playing but want to grow the clubs membership so we can cater for all age groups.

The programme will help us to also invest time into the young people of Ashfield District to lead coaching activities and assist in the running of festivals, but ultimately see them start to help down at the rugby club.

The Sport England Small Grants Programme uses lottery funding to make awards of between 300 and 10,000 to not-for-profit organisations to deliver new community projects to either grow or sustain participation in sport or to support talent development.
