Your News Cheshire lead North's Daily Mail RBS Schools Cup challenge

CHESHIRE Schools rugby enjoyed its finest hour two years ago when three teams from the county emerged victorious in the four finals of the Daily Mail RBS Schools Cup competitions at Twickenham, with Sandbach, Wilmslow High and Lymm High flying the flag for the North West.

This season Cheshire have seven teams still standing, with three already three to the Quarter-finals, Wilmslow and Lymm in the Under 18 Cup and St Ambrose College in the Under 15 Vase.

Another Cheshire quarter-final qualifier is guaranteed as Wirral Grammar and Cheadle Hulme meet at Wirral in a postponed Last 16 tie, Stockport Grammar are in the Last 16 of the Under 18 Vase and Lymm Under 15s are hoping to make it a school double when they travel to RGS Newcastle on Wednesday (January 25) for their delayed Under 15 Cup encounter.

Weve never had two teams reaching this stage in the same year, says Coach Tom Hughes: Theres a real buzz in the school at the moment. Im really hoping that the Under 18s can get to Twickenham because theyve worked so hard and having been there a couple of years ago in the Under 15 Vase with Lymm and also played and won there with Cheshire in the County Championship, I know what a thrill it is.

We only have five of the team that won at Twickenham as Under 15s, although one of them is our England Under 16 scrum-half James Mitchell, who is a sensational player for us at No 10. We only have a couple of lads who managed to get into the Cheshire team this season and basically were a hard-working group which defends well and has backs with enough about them and the ability to score tries from anywhere.

Were just a solid, honest 15-man rugby side. Theres nothing special about us apart from James Mitchell, who is an outstanding player.

And now the Under 18s are looking ahead to a quarter-final trip to the winners of delayed Old Swinford Hospital and Warwick School, what chance do the Under 15s have of joining them in the next stage.

There are some strong teams still around at Under 15 level, but our lads really are a very talented group. says Sale RFC coach Hughes: They have some good, skilful players and they play some really nice rugby.

No-one at Lymm, however, is underestimating the statistics which underline how strong Cheshire schools rugby is once again.

Vying for Under 18 Cup honours, for example, are Wilmslow, who have already inflicted one of the three defeats suffered by Lymm, a last gasp penalty clinching a 12-10 win earlier in the season.

If Wilmslow can topple Kings Worcester in the Quarter-finals and Lymm can get through their test in the Midlands, the pair will meet in the Semi-finals at Broadstreet RFC on March 10m thereby guaranteeing another Cheshire representative on Schools Day.
