Your News Yorkshire and Northumberland U18 open their North campaign in stlye

Yorkshire and Northumberland both launched their North Under 18s County Championship in fine style when they claimed emphatic away wins yesterday.

Yorkshire emerged 30-0 winners over Cheshire at Wilmslow RUFC, scoring six tries in the process, while Northumberland were slightly more emphatic with a seven-try, 41-15 victory over Cumbria at Penrith.

The White Rose youngsters opened the scoring after 17 minutes when an unstoppable drive off a lineout led to impressive Giggleswick flanker Chris Walker crashing over and as the Yorkshire pack became increasingly dominant, Birkdale wingman James Twomey crossed twice before the interval to give the visitors a 15-0 half-time cushion.

The second half followed a similar pattern despite the introduction of several replacements. Walker repeated his first half feat with another try from a lineout drive, replacement scrum-half Mark Gemmell extended the Giggleswick contribution when he darted through for a fine solo try and St Peters, York wing Chris McTurk wrapping up the scoring with the final try.

Cumbria opened the scoring against Northumberland with an early try and were competitive for the opening period, but the visitors finally gained the upper hand and pulled away for a comfortable opening win.

Four of the Northumberland tries came from their lively back division, with wingmen Ben Smith (Kings Tynemouth/Percy Park) and John Summers (Dame Allans), full-back Mattie Dale (Whitley Bay HS/Percy Park) and centre Ben Ford (Queen Elizabeths, Hexham/Tynedale) all touching down.

Northumberland now face Durham at Westoe on October 26, while Lancashire entertain Cheshire on the same day at Tyldesley. Yorkshire are next in action against Durham on November 2 at Darlington Mowden Park.
