PAUL (Pablo) Harding has revealed his surprise at winning the RFU Coach of the Year award.

Paul, Weymouth’s head coach, was nominated for the award by fellow club officials after leading the Monmouth Avenue side to the top of Dorset & Wilts One South.

Harding said: “It was a surprise, but a good one. People did mention that they had nominated me for it, which is great as it means they are obviously happy with what I’m doing, but when I had the letter saying I had won I just thought ‘wow’. It’s a very prestigious award so I’m absolutely thrilled.”

“Wing forward, Harding, began his rugby career at Barton Hill Old Boys in Bristol before moving on to Old Redcliffians rugby club where he was coached by the legendary former Bristol prop forward Mike Fry who had played over 500 games for Bristol, Harding then went on to captain Old Reds from 1994 to 1999.

His job, a data engineer took him to Weymouth in 2003 when he joined the Seasiders and played first team rugby until he called it a day in 2008 when his coaching career began in earnest although he had undertaken some coaching tasks at Old Reds before his move to Dorset.

Harding added: “Weymouth rugby club have supported me in gaining my RFU Level 2 coaching badge and I intend to repay them for their support. I currently coach the Dorset & Wilts. Under 14’s District team as well as the Weymouth under 14’s and Under 15’s. Rugby has given me tremendous pleasure as a player and now I get almost as much back through coaching, would I like to coach at a higher level? Well all I can say is currently Weymouth are on top of the Dorset & Wilts. Division one south and in the final of the Dorset & Wilts Plate competition against Supermarine at North Dorset rugby club early next year, so who knows what will happen in the future, all I can say is that I am very happy at Weymouth they are a great bunch of lads to work with and the committee have given me every support that I have needed”.
