Blaydon's first ever win at Cambridge was achieved despite the slowest of slow starts and then a late rally by the home side that could have given them a share of the points.

In between however Blaydon were at their best for long periods due to a combination of some magnificent

work by the forwards and a brilliant individual effort by man of the match centre Matt Clark.

With Blaydon 'still on the bus' in the opening quarter Cambridge took full advantage to run up a 10-0 lead with a try from their full-back Tobias Berridge and a conversion and penalty from Tom Wheatcroft. When Blaydon finally came to life however it was a different story as the pack took over in the set piece and loose, and after Andrew Baggett had landed a penalty flanker Robert Bell applied the finishing touch to an excellent drive.

Leading 10-13 at the break Blaydon simply tore into their opponents in the second period to run in 2 more tries. They latched onto a poor clearance and quickly shipped it out to powerful winger Dave Sheldon who shrugged off a feeble tackle by his opposite number and dived over in the corner.

Another Baggett penalty then preceded the try of the game when Blaydon moved it in and out and back and forth to completely bamboozle the home defence before Tom Jefferey, the other winger, raced in for his first ever Ist team try.

Now trailing 13-25 Cambridge responded in the closing stages with a second try by Berridge and a Wheatcroft penalty, which was then cancelled out by Baggett, and in the final minute centre Bill Lawson appeared to put a foot in touch when crossing the Blaydon line.

The try was awarded and with the last kick of the game Elliott Bale had the chance to level the scores but was well wide with his conversion attempt, and Blaydon had completed a notable double.
