Your News Rosslyn Park 34 - Blaydon 30

Fourth placed Rosslyn Park with 6 consecutive victories behind them very nearly came a cropper against a re-vitalised Blaydon side that refused to lie down, and in the closing minutes spurned 2 golden opportunities.

Fielding a number of inexperienced players Blaydon were twice in the lead but at the end had to make do with bonus points for both a narrow defeat and scoring 4 tries.

Fly half Andrew Baggett opened the scoring with a penalty but Park grabbed the first try when full-back Nev Edwards joined the line with an incisive burst and Ross Laidlaw added the points. It was a short lived lead however with Baggett landing another penalty before shooting through a gap to put skipper Matt Hall in under the posts, and also slotting over the conversion.

Some poor tactical kicking then put the home side on top, taking full advantage of Blaydons inexperience to add further scores through Miles Mantella and Edwards again, both converted. Despite the reversals Blaydon hit back immediately and in a concerted attack re-cycled it twice before winger Dave Sheldon was over in the corner.

It was 21-18 to the home side at the break but Blaydon were soon back in front with more excellent ball retention and Matt Clark involved three times before finishing off with a trademark effort plus another Baggett conversion.

It was now nip and tuck but the speedy Park backs were a constant danger and scored a 4th try when replacement centre Bill Robinson smartly capitalised on a blindside break. Laidlaw converted that effort and then with a brace of penalties took the score to 34-25 to seemingly put his side well on top.

Back came Blaydon once more however for hooker Hall to be driven over for his second score and set up an exciting finale that could have turned the result.
