A much improved performance by Luctonians saw them run out

comfortable winners by 45 -10 against a Hull Ionians side languishing at

the bottom of the league table. Luctonians found themselves 7 points

down within 2 minutes when winger Gary Stephenson collected his own

chip ahead and raced unopposed under the posts, giving fly half Glenn

Boyd an easy conversion. From the restart Lucs worked their way up field

and following some forward drive eventually saw flanker Nathan Roy-

Smith crash over. John Morris adding the conversion to level the score.

In ideal playing conditions both sides were prepared to give the ball width

and after another three quarter movement hooker Dale Gardner popped

up on the wing to score. The visitors always looked dangerous when their

wingers managed to get possession. On 20 minutes Lucs were caught

offside on their own 22 metre line allowing Boyd an easy kick at goal. On

30 minutes a fine break by fly half Will Burton created space for winger

Morris to race over for a try to which he added the simple conversion.

For the next 10 minutes the visitors put Lucs under pressure but were

unable to breakdown a solid defence. Just before half time Luctonians

lost the services of prop Anthony Marfell with a leg injury.

The home side started the second half strongly and had scored 2 tries

within 7 minutes. First a fine centre field break by Will Richards gave

winger Will Hodnet an easy run to the line, Morris again converting. Then

another break by Burton was stopped short of the line but the ball was

recycled allowing skipper and No 8 Paul Hulland to force his way over for

a try which Morris again converted. With the home forwards beginning to

dominate Hull were starved of any good ball. On 60 minutes a catch and

drive after a penalty saw lock Alex Davidson claim his 3rd.try in 2 games

when he was driven over the line for an unconverted try. Minutes later

the same player was sent to the sin bin following a one sided conversation with assistant referee Fred Farndon after a knock on went unnoticed.

The yellow card spurred Lucs on and with 10 minutes remaining a Hodnet

break was finished off by full back Charlie Meredith. Hodnett converted

to complete the scoring.

Though beaten Ionians continued to work hard but got no change from a

Luctonians team who well deserved their bonus point win.
