A shambolic second half performance saw Luctonians crash to their

heaviest defeat of the season when they lost 31 14 at Stockport.

Despite holding a slender 14 -13 half time lead Lucs capitulated to a

strong running Stockport side who scored 18 unanswered points in a 9

minute spell in the early stages of the second half. The visitors started

off well enough and controlled the opening 5 minutes going through

several phases before getting penalised. Stockport cleared their line and

with their first attack they scored a good try after 8 minutes when

centre Michael Bayssat showed some Gallic flair to finish off a neat move

to score and with full back Josh Longmore converting gave them a 7 -0

lead. Lucs soon levelled when following a penalty kick to touch and one of

their few successful lineouts of the afternoon the pack drove over the

line for lock forward Alex Davidson to claim the try. John Morris added

the conversion. Midway through the half Lucs were penalised for not

releasing allowing Longmore to convert the penalty. Once again Lucs hitback and again a forward drive similar to the first saw Davidson claim his

second try, Morris again converting. A second Longmore penalty with the

last action of the half saw the game tantalisingly poised at 14 -13.

Straight from the restart Lucs tried to run the ball out of their own 22

metre line but were penalised, this time Longmore pulled his kick wide.

The home side were beginning to control the game and the events of the

following 9 minutes shook even the most ardent of the Luctonians

travelling supporters. Firstly a lost lineout saw Stockport centres set up

a passing movement for centre Greg Newton to score an unconverted try.

Longmore then kicked his third penalty before another mistake by Lucs

saw replacement Scott Redfern gather a loose ball and race clear to

score under the posts which gave Longmore an easy conversion. The home

side regained possession from the restart and after a series of forward

drives set up a cool 40 metre drop goal. Shell shocked Lucs then made

several replacements which somewhat stemmed the flow of play but at no

time did they look like breaking down a solid Stockport defence.

Luctonians cause was not helped by losing a number of lineouts when they

set up good attacking positions. Stockport thoroughly deserved their

victory for a solid all round team performance while Luctonians must

improve in many aspects of play to consolidate their position near the top

of the table.
