Newcastle Falcons' game against Premiership rivals London Wasps was postponed at 6.30 pm due to the very high winds sweeping across the North-East. Gusts of over 60 mph have caused havoc in the the region over the past couple of days and when part of one of the posts was blown over and a section of the west stand roof came away, the referee and safety officer were given no option but to postpone the game as there was a risk to the supporters and players.

Referee Spreadbury said: "I arrived at the ground and met with the safety officer, David Culing. Half of one of the posts had snapped because of the high winds, so there was obviously a safety issue there, and with structural concerns also over the stand there was only one decision we could reach. The safety of the fans and the players is of the utmost importance."

With no contingency plan for staging the game over the weekend, it will be left to the two clubs to sort out a suitable time for the game to be played. However, Wasps will find this very difficult as they have already had one game postponed this season due to a frozen pitch at High Wycombe.
