Your News Luctonians 22 - Preston Grasshoppers 15

Luctonians secured their third win in four matches when they recorded a

well deserved victory over a lively Preston Grasshoppers side at Mortimer

Park. Although Lucs dominated territorially for much of the game they

were unable to score a fourth try to gain a bonus point. The home side

faced a stiff breeze in the first half and were soon on the attack but lost

two lineouts in quick succession before they were awarded a 5 metre

scrum from which skipper and No 8 Paul Hulland charged his way over, but

John Morris was unable to convert. Within 3 minutes the visitors replied

with a well worked try when winger Phil Baines jinxed his way past several

would be tacklers to put scrum half Nathan Fowles clear to race over for

a try which outside half Graham Holroyd converted to put the visitors in

front. Minutes later Prestons inferential No 8 Domanic Moon received a

yellow card for a technical offence, but Lucs were unable to exploit

numerical advantage. After 25 minutes Grasshoppers lost the services of

Fowles with a leg injury but were soon rewarded when Holroyd slotted

over a 35 metre penalty to extend the lead to 7 points. Lucs were still

dominating but the visitors were always prepared to run with ball in hand

and exposing some weak Lucs tackling. The score at half time remained

at 5 -10.

Within 5 minutes of the restart Lucs reduced arrears when with Morris

in the blood bin Will Hodnet stepped up to kick a 20 metre penalty.

Luctonians were creating several chances but handling errors were

proving costly. On 54 minutes Grasshoppers lost possession on their own

22 metre line and a quick passing movement saw centre Jimmy Norris go

over for his first try for the club and with Morris converting Lucs

regained the lead. After further sustained pressure near the visitors try

line Hulland grabbed his second try with a close range effort and with

Morris converting Lucs had a 22 points to 10 lead. With time running out

Moon received his second yellow card and this time for foul play, which

meant red leaving the visitors with 14 men for the remainder of the game.

Deep into injury time Lucs were penalised 40 metres out and a quickly

taken tap penalty saw flanker Matt Charters break through several

tackles to score near the corner, but Holroyds conversion attempt fell

short. Luctonians saw out the last couple of minutes to record a well

deserved but hard fought victory 22 points to 15.

Man of the match Paul Hulland.
