Whitgift School, looking for an unprecedented third successive Daily Mail U18 Schools Cup title, opened their 2011/12 title defence with a comfortable twelve try, 72-0, win at home to Riddlesdown High School.

They now go to Gordons School, Woking, in the third round as they continue to bed in a very new look squad.

Whitgifts Director of Rugby Chris Wilkins says: Were certainly going for it. We always try and improve on what weve done and reach our true potential.

Weve had ten players leave the squad this season so we are a younger and less experienced team and theres loads to improve on but well certainly be going for that third title.

Other big second round scorelines included a 41-0 win for The John Fisher School, Purley, over St. Georges College, Weybridge, while The Judd School, Tonbridge, ran out 57-3 winners against visitors Oakwood Park Grammar School from Maidstone.

The Whitgift School U15 side also continued their winning exploits in the Daily Mail/RBS U15 Schools Cup reaching the fourth round with a comfortable 50-0 drubbing of hosts Heathside School. They now face a home tie against South London rivals Wimbledon College who comfortably nudged aside Tiffin School, 62-0.

The next round of matches for both competitions will take place on November 9th.

Its the 23rd year of the U18 Cup now recognised as the leading schools cup competition in the country and which now has the U15 competition running in tandem.

In the U18 Cup the losers of the opening two rounds go into a Plate competition while only the opening round losers go through to the U15 Plate with both the Cup and Plate finals being fought out at Twickenham Stadium, the home of England Rugby, every April.

Last seasons Twickenham finals attracted a record crowd of approximately 14,000 to underline the competitions mass appeal with schools across the country.

Founded in 1988, the competition has contributed to the development of England stars such as Mike Tindall, Danny Care and James Haskell as well as England U20 centre Elliot Daly, who was part of the U18 Cup-winning Whitgift School team last season.

Hoping to follow in Whitgifts path are a further seven schools who have joined the U18 competition this year, with the total number of entries now standing at 464.
