South Tyneside College 2nds 10 Newton Aycliffe 50

Newton Aycliffe Rugby Club travelled to South Tyneside College for their first Durham Junior League match of the season. Traffic problems meant that four of the forwards missed the first 50 minutes of the match, causing Aycliffe to start with 14 men, including Phil Sangster, making his debut. The game began with uncontested scrums.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, and playing uphill, Aycliffe quickly scored two tries, through Deryk Cairns and Drew Gibson. A brace of conversions by Luke Tinkler gave the scoreboard a healthy look. Excellent defence from the whole team saw the bigger College players only score a single try for their efforts, while further tries from Paul Ellis and Gareth Parsonage saw the half time lead 26 – 5 to the visitors.

Andy Newman added a try early in the second half before Aycliffe’s latecomers brought the team up to full strength. With the scrums now contested, South Tyne’s size advantage actually saw them getting a larger share of the ball. Gibson and Parsonage both added tries before a period of pressure from the hosts saw them score a second try. The scoring was finished by Cairns, crossing for the score after taking a short ball from Parsonage. Tinkler scored 5 of his 8 conversions to make the final score 50 – 10 to Aycliffe.

On Saturday 4th October, Aycliffe host Durham City 3rd XV in a friendly, kick-off is at 3pm.
