Birmingham City University and Harper Adams University were the winners at two touch rugby tournaments staged in the West Midlands as part of a new womens development programme aimed at recruiting more players at university level.

The joint initiative between the Rugby Football Union and British Universities and Colleges Sport involved an eight week programme of touch rugby a non-contact version of the sport culminating in two regional festivals, followed by three more weeks of contact rugby and a contact rugby festival.

The touch rugby festivals were staged at Five Ways OE RFC near Birmingham and Longton RFC near the centre of Stoke and were played as round-robin seven-a-side touch rugby tournaments.

Birmingham City University were the winners at Five Ways where they were joined by Worcester University, Aston University, and two teams from Coventry University. Aston won their first match for five years.

At Longton Harper Adams entered three teams and Keele University entered two sides. The Twinkles side from Harper Adams won the festival by winning three and drawing one of their matches.

For many of the players that took part in both tournaments this was the first time they had played rugby competitively and for a lot it was the first time they had even picked up a rugby ball since joining university, said Sarah Hunter, the RFU Rugby Union Student Liaison Officer for the Midlands West region.

The standard improved greatly over the day and all the players and teams have come a long way in four weeks.

In running this programme we hope to improve retention for women players in the university game and provide a gradual introduction for new players into rugby.

It also gives universities such as Aston wanting to start a womens side after a long spell without one an ideal opportunity to do so.
