The new Hong Kong Rugby Football Union (HKRFU) domestic rugby season kicks off this Saturday, 8th October 2011, with a brand new league structure to be launched and a record number of 73 senior men’s and women’s teams participating in nine divisions, up from 64 at the end of last season, to compete for the championships.

New League Structure

Premiership & Premiership A – Rebranding of Division 1 and 2 with seven teams competing in each league

Two new names join Hong Kong’s top flight competition, with the newly-formed Verizon Hong Kong Scottish and local heavyweights SCAA CWB lining up alongside the defending League Champions Newedge Club and Grand Champions Tradition Valley, as well as Altus Kowloon, DeA Tigers, and Leighton Asia HKCC.

Premiership A comprises the second teams of all the above club sides except Verizon Hong Kong Scottish, whose place is filled by PLA Securitas.

Championship

Nine teams will be competing in this new exciting structure. They are the first teams of the remaining local clubs, including University RFC, Police RFC, Comvita City RFC, Gai Wu RFC, Revolution RFC, Tricor Typhoons RFC, Swiss-sure East Kowloon RFC, and debutantes rb-ibi Tin Shui Wai RFC and Discovery Bay Pirates RFC.

The setup of this structure provides a chance for the clubs and the HKRFU to work on structured development plans for those who aspire to move onwards and upwards to the Premiership in the coming years.

Community League 1, 2, & 3 and Development League

With 26 sides taking part in the Community League Divisions 1-3 and eight Development teams make up a total of 57 men’s senior teams this season.

Women’s 15s and 10s

This season sees a constant development of women’s rugby – with six women’s 15-a-side teams and ten 10-a-side teams competing for the titles. Exciting news includes a long-waited return of the Police women’s side – Police Sirens.

“Last season saw fierce competition throughout the leagues, and with the record number of teams, we expect an even more competitive league this season,” Andrew Li, HKRFU Senior League Officer, commented. “The new league structure provides the teams with a fitting competitive environment, and at the same time allows the clubs and the Union to build long-term structured development plans for players in the lower divisions.”

“Both the League Champions Newedge Club and Grand Champions Tradition Valley have been very successful in the domestic league over the past seasons,” Andrew added, “But DeA now have Rowan Varty back from Japan who will line up alongside his international partner Keith Robertson, and national players such as Tsang Hing-hung, Fan Shun-kei and Kwok Ka-chun and Kowloon look threating with a few promising young players from the national age grades, Alex Huet and Cado Lee, led by HKRFU Player of the Year Eni Gesinde. Furthermore HKCC will look to push for honours this season with their exciting backline of the Haynes brothers, whilst SCAA Causeway Bay are expected to be physically strong this season, and newcomers Hong Kong Scottish will be looking to make an impact in what will be a highly competitive league. I believe it is going to be a cracking season!”
