Your News Daily Mail Schools Cup review - North

ONCE upon a time the Daily Mail RBS Schools Cup was a happy hunting ground for teams from the North, but those prosperous times were in the early 1990s and since then the competition has delivered more tears than cheers.

Now another batch of Northern hopefuls are on the road to Twickenham in the Under 15 and Under 18 Cup competitions, with Vase competitions at the two age-groups helping to create a level playing field for early casualties who are at the fledgling end of their rugby development.

Barnard Castle are by no means at that stage, but they know better than most about the pain and anguish the competition can inflict having reached the Twickenham showpiece three times and been beaten in each occasion.

A hefty defeat by the outstanding Colstons Collegiate School from Bristol in 2004 was too clear cut to allow any regrets about what might have been, but a 30-28 reverse at the hands of Oakham the previous year and an even narrower 24-23 disappointment against Warwick School in 2007 were hard to endure.

The last time we were there against Warwick was heartbreaking, says Luke Monument, one of the Barnie coaching team alongside Martin Pepper. But even so, we still look forward to the Daily Mail and the national exposure that comes with getting out and about.

We get a chance to compare ourselves with the best teams in the North and if we get far enough, we play against some of the best teams in the country. Its a great experience to get to Broad Street for the Semi-finals and if you can get to Twickenham thats a tremendous thrill.

It gives us a chance to meet some schools we wouldnt necessarily meet in our traditional fixture list and we get the experience of playing outside our comfort zone against high quality teams.

Looking ahead, were stronger than we were last year at Under 18 level and were quite excited about how the season will unfold. Were hoping to do some good things this time. I dont want to predict where we might get to, but if we stay free of injuries and perform to our best we can match previous years. We rate this years squad.

While Barnie gird their loins for another Twickenham tilt, a handful of new schools have been moving into uncharted waters as they take part in the competition for the first time. The list of debutants in the North section of the Under 15 Cup contains 31 new names and after their Round One efforts, a dozen have progressed, while the losers will be hoping the experience stands them in good stead in the Vase.

At Under 18 level, only two of the 14 Northern newcomers made it to Round Two of the Cup, with St Aidans C of E High School and Stockton Riverside College getting over the first hurdle.
