Yatton Scorers - Tries J Bale; Con G Osborne; Pen G Osborne

‘Promising 1st Half but sun wilted in the final quarter’

Travellers Yatton gifted a penalty conversion to the home side within the first few minutes but grabbed back the penalty difference, with their own, seconds later straight from the restart via George Osborne’s boot.

Five minutes later this fast flowing game in brilliant sunshine saw Keynsham take the lead again as they used their added weight in the scrums. Their wingers try and conversion from far out making the score 10-3 after ten minutes.

The problem area for Yatton were scrum set pieces where Keynsham had a definite edge and open play crunching tackles could not be expected to counter ineffective scrums all the game. Keynsham did receive a sin-binning for boring in during the second quarter but shortly after a Yatton player was also binned in open play.

While one man light Yatton did strike through for a good try. Steve Pugh gathered a Keynsham clearance kick and broke across field at pace. Centre Jon Bale finished off the move evading tackles and running in the dead ball area to give Osborne an easy conversion for his side to draw level.

Osborne’s penalty conversion seconds before the end of the injury strewn first half gave travelling supporters a hint that maybe the season’s first win was a possibility.

At fifty minutes Keynsham’s overlap and good conversion once again put them in the lead but only by four points.

Just as both sides were battling it out and the summer like temperature rose on what was the hottest first day in October for twenty-five years, Yatton’s defence made a fatal clearance kick error, across field to a pod of the home side’s players who had no difficulty in taking advantage and collecting their third try and a nine point score line difference with the final quarter of time remaining.

Yatton were now on the rack facing a fierce dying sun, energy sapping temperature and an ebullient confident home side. Yatton suffered expected injuries and lost shape. Keynsham bulldozed two more converted tries and a final one down the wing.

This Saturday Yatton 1st XV meet Matson at home while the 2nd XV travel to Keynsham 2nds.
