MILLWALL Lions proved their mettle against a strong Charlton Park side on Sunday (October 5).

Despite being overcome by a stronger side the Isle of Dogs boys put in a spirited display full of promise for the future.

“From kick off the worst possible start happened, Charlton managed to score within a minute,” said Millwall Lions coach Chris Davis. “But the defensive game was immaculate by the Lions with only a few yards lost in what was a full out attack from Charlton.”

The game was a rematch against a well-drilled Charlton side after the teams met just a week ago. Millwall showed improvements in both the forwards and backs after the previous fixture.

The weather played against the Lions, with torrential rain and winds blowing into the faces of the team throughout the match. But captain Ollie Jardine had a storming kicking game and got the visitors out of trouble on more then one occasion. The second try in the first half was a quick penalty and the lions were caught off guard.

“The final score in no way represents the performance by the Lions,” added Davis. “We put on an amazing show of teamwork, determination and heart. Our lads were on the back foot throughout the second half but due to some ever so impressive defence we only let in two tries in the second half.”

Millwall’s Jake Vinnicombe won the man-of-the-match accolade for a bone crushing performance. With his pace and good tackling ability he managed to nail the opposition fly half every time. Lions’ captain Ollie Jardine also enjoyed a fine performance, with both his kicking game and ability to structure the back line spot on. George Mulock also put in a storming performance in both defence and attack.
