NORTHERN DUO Dave Reed and Giles Heagerty have been appointed as Head Coach and Assistant Coach respectively of England Under 18 Clubs and Schools for the 2011/12 season.

Reed, the RFU Rugby Development Officer for Northumberland and coach of Morpeth 1st XV, has been involved in the international age-grade coaching set up since 2009 and last season was the Clubs and Schools’ Forwards Coach.

Heagerty, who also has a wealth of experience in young player development, is Academy Coach for Sale Sharks Under 19, Head Coach at Wilmslow RUFC and a rugby coach and PE Teacher at Manchester Grammar School. His new appointment illustrates the regional to international possibilities open to coaches as he steps up from his previous roles as Head Coach of Cheshire Under 20s and Backs Coach of the North Under 20s.

Reed said: "This is an exciting time for the Under 18 age group as there is so much talent coming through the system. John Fletcher's U18s have recently returned unbeaten from a tour to Australia and it was great to see so many of the 2010/11 Clubs and Schools squad being selected to play in August's JP Morgan Premiership Sevens.

"Our priority now is to put together a schedule ensuring that we maximise the benefit of the programme and the potential of the players who make it through the trials."

The England U18s Clubs and Schools team was introduced last season to reward players who have advanced within their Constituent Bodies. It ensures talented players are kept on the International radar whilst continuing to pursue academic and career interests.

Trials for the Clubs and Schools squad begin at regional level and culminate in the Divisional Festival in February at which Reed and Heagerty will select the final 22.
