Yatton Scorers - Pen G Osborne

‘A lesson in well drilled cohesive play’

Yatton’s largely novice team met a recently promoted settled side who have being playing together for the last 2/3 years as a senior team. One of the few exceptions for Chard’s continuity of players is the fact that this current season two ‘Kiwi Players’ are not the same as last years.

The opening 15 minutes showed some promise for travelling Yatton, George Osborne having confidently slotted a penalty after 6 minutes, but later Chard was adjudged held up on the line and their excursions into the 22 area succeeded when a deadleg injury crucially weakened Yattons defence.

Chards second try came minutes after with a well drilled line out drop down to No4 around and in on the short side. Yatton’s valiant defence continued but rifling kicks down field began to miss touch, on field injuries mounted and individual players were targeted by experienced heads in the home side.

But Yatton did have their own attacking moments which unfortunately failed with cover tackling.

Chards third try did not happen until minutes before the halftime whistle; it was a copy of the second try but this time No 4 peeled around the back of the lineout close to the tail. The try conversion making the scoreline 17-3 at halftime.

Chards clocked up three more tries during their purple patch 20 minute period in the second half, all being converted and close quarter line out play being a major feature on their ball while Yattons forward struggled to contain scrum play.

Yatton did sparkle again in the final quarter but with no points reward and Chard knew that after a seasons experience Yatton would then provide a more even contest.

This Saturday Yatton 1st XV have a tough, local derby, home league match against Weston Hornets who have won all three matches so far this season. Yatton 2nd XV travel to Wiveliscombe while the 3rd XV stay home entertaining Keynsham 1Vs.
