Your News Ormiston Rivers Academy launch their own Rugby Academy

Along with a change of name from St. Peters High School to the Ormiston Rivers Academy for the new term the Burnham-on-Crouch school will also now boast one of the first Rugby Academys in the county.

Initially it will be based on their last years successful Year 11 squad that wrapped up the Messa Cup, for Mid-Essex Schools, beating St. Martins, Brentwood, 21-7, in the final back in March.

We are looking to build up the Rugby Academy over the next few years, confirms school administrator Angela Mahoney. Well focus on the Sixth Formers to start with and then roll it back to the Year 11 and 10 pupils later on.

The schools current Head of PE and vastly experienced RFU Level 2 coach Caswell Becker will take charge of the Academy and ensure its smooth running.

The South African played top-class junior rugby for both Northern Transvaal (Blue Bulls) and Boland Cavaliers U17s and U18s before coming to England in 2001.

He now coaches at club and county level as well as helping out with Premiership side Saracens School of Rugby while he is also a qualified ELRA referee.

He will also be supported whole-heartedly by RFU Community Development Coach Scott Murphy and work closely with RFU Cluster groups around the Essex area.

The Academy students will be expected to maintain a high standard of studying and encouraged to participate in positive pursuits other than rugby, aiding them to lead enjoyable, well-rounded lives, says Becker. Academic studies will be complimented by the dedicated Rugby Academy, focusing on a personal development programme to ensure that each individuals capabilities as a rugby player and scholar are maximised.

The Academy will also offer students expert advice and guidance on conditioning, nutrition and lifestyle and will give them the opportunity to gain coaching, refereeing and first aid qualifications.

They will also be encouraged to use the coaching qualifications gained within the broader community, in particular at local Primary Schools and sports clubs.
