Your News Swanage & Wareham 20 - Cheltenham 28

Swanage & Wareham entertained Cheltenham on Saturday, a side which had come down from a higher division and it was we played against only a couple of years ago.

Swans started in their usual way, giving points to the opposition, as after only a minute Swans were guilty of holding on to the ball on their own 22 metres line and Cheltenham kicker Josh Herbert put the visitors 0 – 3 up. Five minutes later the visitors attacked down the left hand side of the pitch, a scrum followed and scrum half Jason Graham worked his way over the line (0 – 8). Swans lost back row forward Matt Jacobs to an injury, after 13 minutes being replaced by Daffyd Wright. A minute later Swans gave away another penalty which Herbert duly converted.(0 – 11). Swans had a couple of penalties which took them within 5 metres of the Cheltenham line, and a typical catch/drive move from Swans forwards enabled prop forward John Sheldrake to score. Charlie Rowberry added the conversion(7 – 11). A brilliant break by winger Charlie Rowberry after 25 minutes saw him only stopped on the visitors 5 metres line, Cheltenham went offside at the ruck, and Rowberry put Swans within one point of Cheltenham(10 – 11). The game was then pretty even, but just before the break Swans gave away another penalty and Herbert put Cheltenham 10 – 14 pts up at the interval.

Swans had much the better of the play for the first quarter of an hour after the restart, but could not turn their pressure into points, but after 57 minutes from a ruck the ball came back to scrum half Chris Tomes who went in for a try to give Swans the lead for the first time by 15pts – 14. However Swans took their feet off the peddle, a long kick put them under pressure and from a ruck, Cheltenham No.8 Charlie Daniel forced his way over the try line. Herbert added the extras 15 – 21. With fifteen minutes to go Swans attacked the Visitors line, a good move by the hosts had centre Darren Wilcox slicing through the Cheltenham defence to score half way out. (20 – 21). Swans continued to put pressure on the Cheltenham defence, they missed a couple of long distance penalty kicks, but the visitors held on. With time running out once again Swans were pressing the Cheltenham line, a dropped ball saw Cheltenham winger Richard Morris scoop up the ball, ran 80 metres to the Swans line, the second time that Swans had succumbed to this in two weeks. Herbert added the conversion and the official called time giving Cheltenham the game by 20 pts – 28 pts.
