For Swanage & Wareham RFC first game of the league season, they travelled away to Sonning where Reading play their home games.

Swans did not get off to a very good start, as from almost the beginning of the game Reading centre Alex Dorliac worked his way over Swans try line. Fortunately Swans responded in kind and from a line out on the 5 metre line Swans had a catch/drive move as No.8 Jamie Maginn went in for a try after only 5 minutes. Three minutes later Reading fly half Tom Sweeney put them up 10 - 5 with a penalty kick. Swans went back on the attack and from a mistake in the home team’s defence, which was seized upon by Swans scrum half Chris Tomes who dummied his way over the line. Winger Charlie Rowberry added the conversion in the absence of Phil Graves who got injured in the friendly game against Portsmouth the previous week.

(10-12). The heavier Reading pack put Swans under some pressure and after 22 minutes they pushed Swans back over the try line as Reading’s no.8 Scott Heirene touched down. Sweeney added the extras. However from the restart the ball went to Alex Dorliac who outpaced the Swans defence as Reading went into a 24 – 12 lead. Sweeney added another penalty giving the home side a 27 – 12 half time advantage.

Sweeney added another penalty for Reading at the start of the second half, but as Swans attacked the Reading line, but an interception by the hosts had centre Tony Lynch running 80 metres to score under Swans posts (37 – 12) after 50 minutes. From then on Swans had most of the play, forcing Reading back in their 22 and on the hour mark a good scrummage had scrum half Chris Tomes going in for his second try. Rowberry added the conversion (37- 19). As the Reading pack tired, Swans started to exert more pressure on the home side and after a series of penalty kicks in the Reading 22 which Swans into the corner for line outs, eventually Swans managed their fourth try as prop forward John Sheldrake crossed the line, to at least give Swans their bonus point for four tries, but had to settle for a 37 – 24 defeat.
