Pre-season has been well attended with a great mixture of youth and experience involved. The warm-up games have reflected that mix also and, as the start of the league campaigns loom, we are well set in terms of knowing how we want to play and where our strengths and weaknesses lie. The new coaching team have focussed training on game scenarios and ball-in-hand skills, which have been well received by all. This has helped to build in the common understanding of our patterns across all of the senior teams.

To date we have negotiated the Kent Cup first round with a close win away against Medway (25-22) and a run out of 35 players in a trial at Maidstone – a day that will be a useful reference point when we meet them in the second round of the cup! Focus over the next few sessions needs to be on honing our playing patterns and better finishing. We have seen a theme in pre-season of failing to convert chances and this area will be key in the bonus point system of the league environment.

The Rugby World Cup, the league season and the club house re-development guarantee plenty of excitement at the Sevenoaks Paddock over the next few months. The 1’s and 2’s have one more chance to put their learning into practice away to Romford on Saturday 3rd September, while the AXV (development team) will be at the Edenbridge festival. All these teams will be at home for the first time on 17th September where we will have a season opener BBQ both before and after the matches.

As usual, injury and unavailability have played their parts through August, particularly in the hooking positions where the attrition rate has been high. As ever, we will need to rely on a substantial pool of players to compete throughout the season, which means plentiful rugby opportunities for all! We have established a clear selection process to help with this, as follows:

· Availability Provided - Saturday to Tuesday

· Selection Meeting – Tuesday evening after training

· Teams on the website – Wednesday morning including 1’s and 2’s squad

· Team Sheets posted in the club house – Thursday evenings

This process will be run by the Chairman of Selectors, Mike McMorran, and relies on reasonable the tenet that ‘available’ means available for Sevenoaks across all of the senior teams, for which there will be no changes from previous years.

The key contacts in the teams are:

1st XV and 2nd XV– Danny Vaughan, John Whitehead and George Roffey

A XV – Mark Reay and Jon Muchmore (added responsibility for the AXV is to develop junior members into the existing more experienced ranks)

Acorns – Lee Barnes (league and Evergreen Cup)

B XV – Steve Brooks (mainly friendlies, but any B players wanting to play more rugby just need to make their availability known to team managers)

All the relevant contact details are available on the website – www.sevenoaks-rugby.org.uk

Special Note - Saturday 17th September is the first home game v Tunbridge Wells with the local derby promising to be a real cracker. There will be the traditional Supporters Lunch at the Club as well as a BBQ before and after the game, so be ready to celebrate the season opener at the Paddock with an afternoon of great sport, good feasting and a few pints of Kent’s finest.

Rugby World Cup

Please note that we will be screening all the key Rugby World Cup games on Saturday or Sunday mornings with a new BIG screen and full English breakfasts (to go with the Guinness), so make the clubhouse your venue of choice as you follow the fortunes of England and South Africa as they advance inexorably to a dream final!

The opening England game is v Argentina on Saturday 10th September at 09h00 and we will also be showing the Wales v Springboks game on Sunday 11th at 09h00. Breakfast and Guinness served at both matches.

Training is at the Paddock every Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 19h00. There will also be specialist fitness input at training. All players from all the senior teams are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Clubhouse Extension – the Paddock Project

New pictures on the website – take a look at www.sevenoaks-rugby.org.uk/Clubhouse+Extension+Project++

Members will have noticed that building works are well advanced and this is to complete the second phase of the project, which is the extension of the changing rooms and the players and officials facilities downstairs, the new entrances to the Clubhouse at both ends and to extend the upstairs members areas.

We were able to embark on this final phase due to the generous grant from the RFU and agreement with the STC as to the terms of the extended lease. This project is critical to securing rugby in Sevenoaks for the next generation, while allowing members and supporters to be part of a club that they can be proud of.

Further funds are required to be able to complete the building works and all members are urged to look at the website for ways that they can get involved, including the Buy-a-Brick campaign which will preserve your name in the Clubhouse as a benefactor of this most worthwhile endeavor.

Please go to www.sevenoaks-rugby.org.uk/Clubhouse+Extension+Project++ for all the details
