Organisers of the Seckford Shield, the first ever fun touch-rugby competition to be played between Woodbridge pubs, have won the opportunity to send one of ten teams to play Touch Rugby at Twickenham. Woodbridge Rugby Club, Suffolk Coastal District Council and Suffolk Sport’s lottery-funded Sportivate campaign heard this week that they had won the O2 Touch Facebook competition with their extensive coverage of their well-supported tournament.

The team of ten players, seven men and three women, young and not so young will enjoy breakfast at Twickenham watching the England v Argentina game from 9:00am, play Touch Rugby in the afternoon, followed by a BBQ, drinks and presentations with Rob Andrew. The day will finish at 4:30pm.

The Seckford Shield is approaching its fifth Sunday of action at Fen Meadow at 4pm in Woodbridge. So far a growing crowd and players have enjoyed the post-match hospitality provided by the Coach & Horses, Angel, Red Lion and Bell & Steelyard pubs. With the final scheduled to take place at Woodbridge Rugby Club’s grounds in early September the table so far looks as follows with surprise leaders the Red Lion: -

As Karen Fletcher, Amazons, Mariners Vets player and member of the Woodbridge Touch Twickenham Squad says “it started as a fun bit of exercise on a Sunday afternoon but it has grown fast to become a regular entertainment for supporters as well as sparking friendly rivalry amongst the pubs of Woodbridge. We never imagined it would give ten of us the chance to play on the hallowed turf! Just think, I’ll have played at Twickenham”.
