Your News Barking 28 - Blaydon 26

With time running out Blaydon looked to have started the new campaign with a bang against last seasons runners-up only to have it cruelly snatched from their grasp in the final play. Forward pressure from the home side saw flanker Jason Nathan crash over in the corner and Liam Dyer secure a dramatic victory for them with a difficult last kick conversion.

Frank Field had opened the scoring for them with a penalty but Blaydon hit back to take the lead when Nial Rowark broke incisively from mid-field to supply winger Frazer Wilson who raced in from 25 metres.

Barking fly-half Will Nelson then went over from close range and Andrew Henderson added a penalty but by the interval it was all square at 11-11 after Andrew Baggett had landed a brace of penalties.

The home side edged in front once more soon after the restart through their hooker Adrian Duncan, conversion by Nelson, but they were constantly under pressure having lost a forward to the sin-bin. Their weakened pack repeatedly offended at a scrum near the line resulting in a penalty try for Blaydon, and then Baggett levelled matters with another penalty.

Dyer and Baggett exchanged further penalties before Blaydon produced what appeared to be the killer blow at yet another scrum on the home line, flanker Rob Bell getting the touch for a pushover try. Full-back Gavin Painter, another debutant, made it 21-26 with the conversion and hopes were high but in the end their only reward was a bonus point.
