BEVERLEY opened their Yorkshire Cup campaign with a 22-20 victory over Hull Ionians at Beaver Park.

Beverley opened the scoring after 10 minutes through Steve Johnson, following initial breaks by Junior Tupai and Sam Atiola.

Phil Duboulay added the conversion.

Tomkins converted a penalty to reduce the arrears to 7-3.

Midway through the first half Ionians took the lead from a forward drive following a line-out in the Beverley 22. Tomkins added the conversion for 10-7.

Almost on the stroke of half-time Duboulay levelled with a great penalty for 10-10.

After the break Beverley took the lead with a smart try by Ben Johnson.

After a period of sustained Ionians pressure, Jenkins converted a penalty for 15-13.

After a series of forward drives the referee awarded Ionians a penalty try and dispatched Goran Jelencic to the sin-bin.

Beavers mounted strong attacks, and a superb break from halfway spread-eagled the Ionians' defence and Rob Smith finished off the move with an excellent match-saving try.

Duboulay slotted home the conversion with the last kick of the game.
