Your News Bristol Bisons to host the Union Cup 2013

Bristol Bisons RFC have won a bid to host the 2013 Union Cup, beating Dublin in the final voting round to bring a great sporting event to Bristol.

The Union Cup is Europe’s biennial gay rugby cup and will be a real opportunity to put Bristol on the map for visitors from across Europe. The cup attracts over 400 visitors from France, Portugal, Denmark, Belgium, Holland, Ireland and even as far as field as Australia.

The Bristol Bisons are a developing club, established in 2005 as an inclusive team. Over the last year membership has risen rapidly and the club now boasts close to 30 regular players as well as numerous supporters.

The bid to host the tournament was well received and supported by the Bristol Council and Destination Bristol, the local tourist board.

Cllr Barbara Janke Leader of Bristol City Council said: “Bringing the Union Cup to Bristol will mean so much to so many people in the city, a city which is ready, willing and excited to host such a tournament. As we are all aware, sport has an incredible power to unite people and communities alike.”

Michalis Sanidas, Bison’s Chairman, added: “The Union Cup represents a great opportunity for Bristol on many levels. As well as a chance for Bristol to promote itself on the international stage, it is a chance for the city to really step up to the mark on equality and acceptance issues. Clubs like the Bisons provide a much needed place for people, including many young people, to meet and develop as part of an accepting group.”
