Your News LSH girl moves up England Women ladder

LIVERPOOL St Helens Under 15 captain Claudia Dowdeswell has been selected to join the England Girls National Talent Development Group, the elite squad of 35 players who will meet for the first time at Wellington College in Berkshire in August.

Claudia, who attends De La Salle School and has also represented Lancashire and the North of England, was understandably delighted with the news. She said: “It’s really amazing to get this opportunity and I can’t wait to get involved with the England set-up. I have to keep pinching myself to make sure I’m not dreaming”.

Club Chairman John Bithell wasn’t surprised at the news: “We’ve seen the Girls Section at LSH go from strength to strength over the last two years and I’ve watched them play a few times. Claudia is a very exciting prospect who can play in a number of positions, so I think she will do very well indeed”.

Steve Metcalfe, Chairman of Junior Rugby at LSH, said: “Claudia has been outstanding all year for both club and county. On the pitch she is a real force and she is very special to us here at Moss Lane”.

Girls Rugby Union in the North of England has seen a real resurgence over recent years, which looks set to continue with the introduction of an Under 13s team from next season.

RFU Community Rugby Coach John Foster, who also coaches the North of England girls, said: “The new Under 13s age group for girls will be very popular indeed. We will be holding trials at the club on Wednesday 27th July for any players who are interested. And who knows, one day some of them may follow in Claudia’s footsteps and play for England.”
