Verwood 38 - Kingsclere 0

On a day when one of Britains greatest ever Olympians Darren Kenny returned to his home town of Verwood the towns rugby side continued its good progress under the tutorage of head coach Jim McGuffie and director of rugby Mike Cockram.

Kingsclere - one of the early favourites for promotion this season - were overpowered by the young Verwood team 6 tries to nil, this despite not registering the first score for 30 minutes. The first score was as a result of a steal at the line out by Tom McGuffie who collected at the back and drove over from 5 metres. Paul McGuffie converted. Not long after as Verwood began to settle, the ever present Matt Pike collected a beautifully timed pass from full back Karl Jensen to score the first of his 2 tries to make it 12-0 at halftime.

The second half was all one way traffic and Verwood scored after a mesmorising run by promising new boy Chris Roberts to score near the touchline (pictured) and this was superbly converted by Paul McGuffie.

After some great inter passing Karl Jenson fed a well judged inside pass to winger Mark Hutchison to come off his wing and score under the posts. Again McGuffie converted. The forwards, not to be outdone, linked together for Mickey Mazzeo to score.

The final try by Matt Pike was the result of a hanging kick from Paul McGuffie which was not fielded by Kingsclere allowing Pike to gather and score.

Scorers : Tom McGuffie, Matt Pike 2 ,Mickey Mazzeo, Mark Hutchinson, Chris Roberts

Conversions : Paul McGuffie 4.

Man of the Match: Rob Ford.
