Sevenoaks Extra 1st XV versus Maidstone 20th September 2008

Sevenoaks were always going to be favourites, going into this their second league match, due to their impressive form in preseason training and in a couple of friendly games against local sides. In fact only two weeks before they had beaten a similar Maidstone side in torrential rain on the cabbage patch!

The game started quickly in fantastic conditions, with the ground firm enough underfoot to allow an attacking wide game, but with enough give to protect the forwards in the inevitable big crunches that typify this local derby type game. Some impressive scrummaging from the Oaks front row made life difficult for the Maidstone pack but led to uncontested scrums early on, nullifying a key advantage of this side.

Sevenoaks took a while to get into their attacking backs game, at first over running passes and not displaying the cool head of a slightly more experienced side. The back row made good use of the extra energy available to them from not having to scrummage and took the game to the Maidstone half back combination with some powerful running from the base.

The stars of the show as the fitness pre season started to make inroads was the Sevenoaks back three of Barber, Barber and Pollock. An impressive combination of youth, experience, sheer pace and some genius attacking flair, which saw a total of 39 points recorded between the three of them. Johnny Barber using the boot well to add extras as well as three tries. Pollock scoring a thirty yard individual try down the left wing showing no mercy to his opposite number and Will Barber showing his crushing pace and sidestep to wrong foot almost entire back divisions twice!

Maidstone to be fair never gave up the fight, a well worked back row try from the base of the scrum proving their only reward as a momentary lapse of concentration from Oaks allowed a small break, the resultant disappointment clear to see on the entire oaks side and probably provided a good spur to completing the final score.
